Connecting Health with Gospel

Mission Stories

Health Redone is a ministry project that brings youth who are on fire to share Gods word to the local communities. Last summer, more than twenty young students went door to door presenting health and spiritual materials, as well as a hand out voucher for the community to attend a free health expo at a local church. One powerful testimony happened on the very first day while the students went out to the fields. Two students by the name of Tara and Skylar knocked on a blind lady’s door. This lady could not see both Tara and Skylar, but because of their genuine love that was heard in their voices, she was impressed to invite them into her home. Shortly after, they both went into her home and presented health and spiritual materials. She was left with four books that would help her relationship with God, as well as a voucher for the health expo happening on July 19th. By God’s grace, we will again see her and her family at the church. At the end of the night before leaving the fields, the van had the privilege to encourage her by singing a hymn and praying for her. It is amazing to see the effective results as the ministry of health and literature evangelism combines.

One Summer Evening when the sun was setting, I was knocking on an entire apartment complex. It seemed like nobody was home because there was nobody answering. Just before I was going to give up and go to another street I had an impression by the Holy Spirit to keep going. The last door of the apartment an old lady answered her door. She immediately yelled "Not Interested." I set the books down on the floor and said "ma'am, Im not selling any books but just a Christian Missionary here to pray for you." She fell on her hands and knees and started crying. I asked her what was wrong? she said, "how do you know, how do you know?" I asked about what, She said, "how do you know my husband just past away an hour ago?" I was stunned and had no idea what to tell her. I asked for wisdom and words from the Holy Spirit and he said through me," ma'am whats your name, She replied Carol. I invited myself in her home and asked her if she was a Christian. She said no, intact she was an atheist. The ironic thing was her husband was a christian and he invited her to church all the time but she refused and thought it was a bunch of baloney. I left her with two books "Peace above the storm" and "Lessons of Love." I told her lessons of love will help you start your new relationship with Christ, and Peace obove the storm will give you peace amongst the storm you are going through. Then I asked her the million dollar question, " Carol would you like to accept Jesus to be your personal Savior and Lord?" She replied, "Yes." I connected her to the nearest church and after that experience, I said to myself, this is why we do this work for people like Carol. Please continue to keep Carol in your prayers.

I was knocking in a hispanic community in Rancho Cucamonga. A lady opened the door and she was in a wheel chair. She had just gotten into an accident and lost her two legs. Her husband left her as a result and she lost her job and was about to lose her house. I told her i was a Christian Missionary and she started crying. I prayed with her and encouraged her that God will take care of her and bless her. She said, "your my angel." I said, no I'm just was sent by God to you at the right moment.

“As we met this African-American lady named Lilian, we transitioned from health into spiritual things, such as the topic of religion. Her eyes grew and her interest sparked more. She opened up to share about her love and zeal for God. When she found out that we, the canvassers, would face more people from door to door, she instantly told them to always carry their swords, the word of God, because ‘the sword is to fight the enemy,’ she said. After for praying for her, she prayed for the canvassers. We go door to door with a mission to teach spiritual things to others, but that day we realized we are always going to be learning on this journey.” -- Celine Moreno, age 15

“My partner, Erick, and I went down a cul de sac with one specific prayer-- for God to help us get into a home. We know that getting into homes would help us make better relationships with the people of the community. After that prayer, God answered three houses down. Rebeca, this lady, invited us into her home, where we became friends over the book, the Great Controversy. She discussed about the history of the twelve tribes of Israel. Afterwards, we left her with the Great Controversy, Plants That Heal, and Be Careful Who You Trust. We saw that each book fit one of her many needs from her spiritual growth, her health, and her grandchildren. By the grace of God, she signed up for bible studies.” -- Nikki Moreno, age 17

“On this fiery summer day, a lady named Maria Angelica opened her house to us. We talked about her nine-month old child who she adopted.  Although Maria was not Chinese like her adopted daughter, she told us that she was learning Mandarin, the Chinese language, to teach her daughter the Chinese culture. Maria shared how her adopted daughter was not wanted by her birth parents because she was a female, rather than the prized male. After building a relationship with Maria over her daughter, she disclosed her family health issues. Her mother has diabetes and her father died from cancer, which interested and inclined her to keep the health message books, especially Plants That Heal. We left Maria with message books and prayers. She signed up for bible studies and free vacation bible school services.” -- Erick Cerritos, age 20 & Nikki Moreno, age 17

“I asked God for a special miracle and blessed experience. We met an elderly person who found hope again for the youth by seeing us at his door. This man was fun and hilarious to talk to, but sooner or later, our conversation transitioned into a serious note. Normally, people are not as open to admit their bad health issues. However, he shared how his wife was dealing with obesity, which we were able to sympathize with him. After showing the health materials, he was opened to spiritual conversations. Leaving the books allowed the elderly man to also become a new literature evangelist to his friends, his sphere of influence. We do this work so to bring hope to others that they may also become medical missionaries and literature evangelists to their own community and spheres of influence.” -- Timothy Ba Maung, age 19

During our lunch break, I sought to help this homeless young man on the street. I saw that he needed food, so I went to end his hungry. Soon, the young man told me his life story. He decided to become independent, living on the streets because of his parents who made poor decisions. As I left him, he eventually comes back looking for me. He asks me to pray over him and his group of friends. Having nothing, the homeless young man saw his need for intercessory prayer. I know that God will bless that prayer and that young man’s faith.” -- Erick Cerritos, age 20

“Rushing out of their home, a family did not seem interested in our materials because of the rush. However, we stayed faithful and persistent because there was one lady, named Cameron, who was staying at the house. We opened with NEWSTART and our health materials. As soon as we presented health, she invited us into her home. Eventually, she opens up to

A 19 year old student named Ashley was knocking and praying at a specific door, as Ashley was waiting, a young girl opened the door holding a knife to her stomach. Immediately the Lord spoke through our missionary saying: “I am a Seventh-Day Adventist Missionary here to let you know that Jesus Loves You.” The 16 year old girl dropped the knife and started crying. Ashley then gave her a big hug and prayed with this young girl. The girl told Ashley that right before she was about to kill her self she prayed to God saying, “If You are real, send someone to my door, and thats when you knocked.”

I told her that lessons of love will help her start her new relationship with Christ, and Peace above the storm will give her have peace amongst the storm she was going through. Then I asked her the million dollar question, “Carol, would you like to accept Jesus to be your personal Savior and Lord?" She happily replied, "Yes." Her husband left her as a result and she lost her job and was about to lose her house. I told her that I was a Christian Missionary and she started crying. I saw the presence of Jesus working with me in the streets. I met this man who had tattoos all over his body holding his one year old daughter. In my mind I started praying that I can be a light to this man. In the house, I saw a flag that said Jesus, and asked him about that flag. He started crying and opened up to me and said that a year ago his wife had died, and it left him at home without a job taking care of his kids. He went through a depression stage and got all these tattoos and started drugs. He was a Christian, but after losing the love of his life he questioned the existence of God. When I knocked on his door he asked many questions and I saw the presence of God speaking through me as I was answering his questions. I am not much of a talker but by the end of the conversation I received his contact information and referred him to the nearest church. I prayed with him and left him with Steps to Christ and an Amazing Health Facts magazine.

I met this man that was very troubling. He said he communicated with the dead. For some reason the Holy Spirit impressed me to show him a book called The Great Controversy. He said he was very interested and I said it will help you understand the controversy between Good and Evil. He was really interested when I shared with him about Christ, he then said he was going to read the book.

Two of our missionaries Candice and Jo Ann went to invite an atheist to the health expo that was going on in the church. The lady called and said how God has sent two young ladies to her door leaving her books. As she read through them she started to understand Christ better and decided to attend the church that the girls were stationed. It was a blessing to see the lady so encouraged by these young girls that she decided to start bible studies in her church.

I knocked on a lower income community in Moreno Valley, while I was walking up to this door there was a big buff man that looked really scary. I felt impressed to ask him if he would like a prayer. He came to me and told me his story of how two weeks prior to me knocking on his door he got into a fight with his brother in a bar and was in a coma. This was the first day that he got out of the hospital. I immediately asked him if there was anything I can pray for. He started tearing and said that he wants to get rid of this alcoholic addiction. He didn't know how to pray so I taught him right then how to talk with God. I left him with Steps to Christ and said to him that whenever he has the urge to drink, pray to God and read this book. He will help you overcome addiction.

It was 4th of July when I encountered this old lady walking down the street. I tried to show her the materials that I had but she didn't seem interested. She told me she had cancer and she wasn't sure if she would make it another month. I had the privilege to share with her stories about the healing power of Jesus. She became really curious and by the end of the talk, I was able to get her contact information to be followed up with bible studies. I left her with 3 books and she was really touched that she said, “Ill never forget this,” she then gave me some food to bring along my journey.

God protected me in time of danger. I was walking to talk to a group of young men, I didn't know that they were dealing drugs. When they heard my safety radio go off, they thought that I was a cop. They were then threatening me and I sent a quick prayer to God and told them right away that I was an Adventist missionary here to share Christ’s love with them. They asked me some questions about God and I witnessed their attitudes shift and changed. They were interested in the materials I had. I felt the presence of thousands of angels flooding to protect me and they decided to learn more about God through the books I gave them. I also was able to pray with them before I left. God protected me through that experience.

I was canvassing one day in Northampton and I was dropped off at a business strip.  I started canvassing people on the sidewalk and this one man pushed me to the ground while screaming “Get out of here!  No body wants you here!” as my books fell out of my hands.  Everyone that saw what happened supported the man who had wronged me.  I called my leader to pick me up to drop me off in a area that I felt more secure.  As I was waiting I saw a Christian church and I tried to go in but they also kicked me out because they didn’t want me to offend anybody at the church.  They said “Not everyone here is Christian.”  My leader picked me up and I started canvassing at houses.  It was rough bu t I kept persisting and ran into this lady at her door.  She swore she has and will never give money at the door, but I told her I will give her this book called “Steps to Happiness.”  She said “Just because you’re nice you will be the first person I will give money at the door.”  I prayed for her and through this one experience all the trials before that went away.

Our first week out in the field proved challenging.  New England is a post-Christian culture.  Many of the residents here are content and believe they are in need of nothing.  To them, Jesus is a fictitious character and the Bible is a book like nay other written to be understood only as tales and legends.  As I approached my first house I peered through the screen door.  I saw a young boy who looked at me with daunting interest.  I asked him Kindly to have his mother come meet me at the door.  Quickly,  the boy called for his mother who said she wasn’t interested.  A few houses down the same boy beckoned me to come back and I was impressed to return.  Before knocking on the door the mother quickly opened the door and apologized for being so rude in sending me away.  She invited me in and asked me to show her all that was in my bag.  She looked at all the books but decided to only take the cookbook and The Great Controversy.  She had not been religious and was not interested in our materials, but she decided that she was going to invest in me for my perseverance in working in the field.  My hope is that this family will be blessed as they study the Great Controversy.

It was the day after a bad storm that consisted of heavy rain, wind and tornado watch.  Exhausted and yet hopeful for a new day I prayed for divine appointments specifically I prayed for Bible study contacts.  In a low income, drug infested neighborhood I met Crystal and her three very young daughters.  She was on the front deck of her apartment complex smoking and chatting with a girlfriend.  As I approached them I whispered a prayer, “Lord give us a Bible study and books in the home.  I joined in the conversation as they described where and what they were doing when the storm hit the day before.  Her friend said “you guys are crazy for being out there in those conditions.”  Just as I though friend was going to try to dominate the conversation she stood up from her seat and went inside, tossing her cigarette into the ash tray and said, “Oh look, its time for me to make dinner.”  Crystal seemed to open up and relax as she told me she has three daughters ages five, four, and two.  They all came out screaming, “we’re hungry!”  I showed Kidilicious, the children’s cookbook, Real Heroes and Daniel Chronicles DVD as a family set to which Crystals eyes lit up.  She told me how she recently stopped abusing pain medications when she stopped selling them to people.  She also has a desire to stop smoking and learn more about God.  Her girls were getting antsy so I closed her on all three and she got all three and also decided to sign up for Bible Studies.  Gos answered prayer and allowed me to meet Crystal, someone I could relate to.  She said as I left that people in her neighborhood use substances, but without the drugs they disappear.  We parted ways knowing that we had a friend in Jesus and in each other.

It was my friend summer canvassing and experienced the usual high and low days.  By my second week it was raining intensely and I went to this old house to canvass a mother and her son.  As I spoke to the mother a little about myself the son rudely interrupted cussing at me to try to get me to leave.    I got discouraged but my leader was there and prayed for me so that God could uplift me.  After that shocking experience books started to go out and the whole street was a huge blessing not only financially but also spiritually.  I believe Satan was trying to really discourage me to stop canvassing so that those souls wouldn’t get the books but through perseverance we overcame!  This experience has made me closer to God and I now that for sure He will never leave me

Here I was at one of those houses in which the door was open.  I hesitated but felt impressed to knock on that door regardless.  A mother came out with her small daughter behind her.  The conversation turned to a spiritual one.  The mother shared that she hadn’t been to church since she was a child, but her daughter was currently experimenting with religious things.  As I canvassed the mother she shared the books with her daughter so I included the little girl in the canvass.  I closed and ask which book interested them the most.  The daughter gave back  Bible Answers and Real Heroes  while continuing to cling to the Lessons for Living.  That was her favorite book.  The mother said she didn’t have the money to get it and convinced the daughter to give it back.  “It’s ok” I said, “I’m going to get it for her this time.”  The mother encouraged the little girl to give me a hug which she did without further coaxing.  “That’s big for her” her mother explained, “she barely gives me hugs.  She has autism.”

On our second day, we encountered a man who started threatening to call the police.  He was on his porch across the street.  I faced him with a huge smile and thanked him!  He softened a bit and said he was just warning us that somebody might call the police.  I thanked him again.  I was praying for him.  Fifteen minutes later as I waited for my partner near the corner, I saw im returning from a store around the corner, carrying a 12 pack home.  He walked right towards me with a beautiful smile on his face because I was beaming at him.  He said, “You don’t know who I am, do you?”  I said “Yes sir, I do!”  He said, “I wasn’t trying to tell at you, we just have been so swamped with people selling from the power companies, it was too much.”  I spoke to him, and though he would not take a thing , he went home happy knowing he was cared for.  I had a miracle! Answered prayer

As I was canvassing this lady she told me that she too canvassed but did some kind of medical insurance for the elderly.  She said she was not religious whatsoever but did want to help.  She gave about me $3 and inquired more as to why I was there.  I answered all of her questions and she asked if I had a business card of some kind so I gave her our drop down Ten Day Transformation.  This has the website at the back of the book.  She got really excited and seeing her positive reaction I decided to also give her Happiness for Life but warned her that “This little book is heavily charged with spiritual material” and she says “Perfect! This is exactly what I needed!”  She said she was a Christian before but no longer believed and would only accept things like this from me because we connected really well.  Her reaction puzzled me because earlier she expressed herself very negatively towards religious things but here she was knowing what she was accepting and gladly took the material.  She also accepted a little glow tract called “The struggle between good and evil” and thank me saying “These are perfect for em and will help me understand who you guys are.”

A man by the name of Joe was outside a home smoking a cigarette and I greeted him as excitedly as possible from a distance to lighten his trouble face.  I presented to him the health books but he wasn’t interested and told me that his daughter was in therapy for anxiety an depression. He told me that the building is a clinic for people with major emotional issues.  I expressed to him that I too was in depression and almost ended my life but didn’t because God was there for me in a time so dark of my life.  I showed him Happiness for Life and told him that in my own experience and in the experience I’ve seen in others “books like these are the kind that help people thought tough times like these.” I said therapy is good but with help from higher power, God, would get her through this stage of her life.  He said he wasn’t religious but would donate for the book and gave $10.  Prior to speaking to the man a neighbor gave just exactly what Joe needed to take the book Steps to Happiness.  I gave him the book and he said he would keep the Happiness for Life and put the Steps to Happiness inside the waiting room because other people suffer from depression and so they can read as well.

While canvassing with the team outside of a strip mall in Massachusetts, I met a young woman who was looking for a church in the area.  At first she showed interest in the cookbook I was sharing with her.  Then as I placed the bookstore price in front of her and explained that the donations we raised through our “phone-a-thon” would cover the cost for her too take it home she was moved with compassion toward what we were doing.  I selected “Desire of Ages” from my handset and shared it with her, discussing the main points.  Again I pointed to the bookstore price and told her that someone paid this price for her already.  In a sobbing sincere voice she asked, “Why are you doing this for me?”  In my reply she smiled with joy that seemed to soar high above her previous countenance.  I told her that we were in the community providing this service, “because we love people.” She also signed up to bew notified when we establish a community workshop in town.  I am confident that my new friend will be attended by the Holy Spirit as she reads her new books containing the truth for this time.

On the way to our evening territory we exchanged prayers. My prayer was that the first person I meet would come outside and connect with me. I passed two houses with no answer starting off. On the third house I knocked on the door. I hesitated because there was no answer after two knocks. I knocked a third time and placed a glow track in the door. As I turned around to walk away the homeowner immediately pulled into the driveway and we began speaking to each other. He enjoyed our conversation and he gave a small donation but did not desire any of the books. I did leave him with a Steps to Christ pamphlet and made my way down the street. The Lord answered my prayer that I would meet my first contact outside. In this work, God’s omnipotence is always evident to those who ask for His direction on the canvassing path.
